1. When did La Salle die? What age? What did people shout in the streets and what was his reaction to the shouting?

St. John De La Salle died in the year 1719, at the age of 68. Bro. Leo Kirby writes,
"...people in the streets shouted out, the saint is dead". And his reaction, as Kirby says, "Some twenty years earlier, when a woman had called me a saint, I roared with laughter. I did the same thing after my death. I'm still laughing".

2. Why were La Salle and his Brothers accused of destroying the education system?

St. La Salle and the Brothers were told many times by people of their day that they were ruining the education system. Those people thought that the poor should not be educated because they had no right to be and that they should stay in their place as poor people. Bro. Kirby writes,
" Another wrote that the only way to stop the Brothers was to get them out on the farms and have them plow the land instead of cultivating the minds of people who didn't need an education. That critic was Voltaire, supposedly one of the great French intellectuals of that time."

3. What were some improvements and changes that St. La Salle made to the education system to better suite it to teach a lower class of children?

St. La Salle made a few changes to what was the current educational system of his day for the teaching of a lower class. One change he made is that he started to teach a large number of children all at the same time, instead of just teaching one student individually while the rest of them are running wild around the room. Also St. La Salle and the Brothers taught in the vernacular of the region, in his case, French. He said that first, the students had to learn Latin, just so they could be taught in Latin. La Salle and his Brothers completely skipped an irrational step and just taught in French. This way they didn't need to spend years trying to teach the students Latin, and then start the actual teaching, they could just start teaching in French. Another innovation that La Salle and the Brothers made is that they knew their students, not as a number but by name. Bro. Kirby writes, "I wanted my Brothers not only to know their students but also to love them with the tenderness of a mother and the firmness of a father".

After six years of a "honeymoon period" why did things become difficult for De La Salle?

Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "I celebrated Mass at the shrine and gave Communion to the twelve Brothers... sort of a honeymoon period." (28)

What did De La Salle say Nyel's one mistake was?

Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "I did not want to make Nyel's mistake... he would open up one school and then start another before the first school had taken root." (28)

Why did De La Salle rush from Rheims to Paris in hot July weather?

Leo Kirby, FSC, speaking in the voice of De La Salle writes, "One time it took me three days to rush from Rheims to Paris in hot July weather... to be at the bedside of a dying Brother." (33)

After the six years of the "honeymoon period," why did things become difficult for St. John Baptist de La Salle?
-After the six years of the "honeymoon period", things became difficult "in the form of troubles with Church officials, conflicts with established groups of teachers who charged fees, hassles of court appearances, seizure of schools by the courts, and deaths and departures of our Brothers"(28). Also, his health began to deline and he and a few others began begging for alms.

Throughout these tough times de La Salle realized somethings that made his life tough. What type of strategy did he for to help fix these problems?
-The strategy that de La Salle realized and created was that city schools were more important than country schools because more children went to there, and therefore they produced better. Also, de La Salle could visit Brothers more easily and more often. And Brothers would be less lonely in large city schools.

In what way did St. John Baptist de La Salle want the Brothers to act toward students?
-St. John Baptist de La Salle wanted the Brothers to really care for their students. He wanted them to get to know them, love them, and learn about all their specifc needs. Also he wanted them to be educated, so that the material they were passing on to the students was good information and could get them places in life.

In 1686 The brothers held, The General Assembly of the Brothers, they held this in celebration of their birth.

3.) When did the biographers say De La Salle died? At what age? What did people shout in the street? What was De La Salle's reaction to people who called him a saint while he was still alive?

After six years of a "honeymoon period" why did things become difficult for De La Salle?
-He had troubles with church officials, conflicts with teachers that charged fees, hassles over court appearances, and deaths and departures of brothers. Bro Kirby says as La Salle, " To make matters worse my health was declining."(28)

What was his big move at the age of 30? Why did he make this move?
- His big move at the age of 30 was inviting all the teachers to live with him. "It didn't sit to well with my relatives."(24), Bro Kirby explains. I think he made this move to make it easier on them to get to work and home.

What happened 50 years into De La Salle's death involving the first school he founded?
-They were subjected to the same criticism as St. La Salle had recieved during his life. "One author acused my brothers around 1760 of 'ruining everything, teaching reading and writing to people who ought never to learn anything but to handle the plane and the file'"(30), said bro Kirby after the death.

After six months of a "honeymoon period" why did things become difficult for de La Salle? Because he had to deal with troubles with Church officials, conflicts with established groups of teachers who charged fees, hassles over court appearances, seizures of his (and their) schools by the courts, and deaths and departures of his (and their) Brothers.

Why did Pope Pius XII name La Salle the patron of all teachers? Because they taught (of course), they were wise, and because they helped set up schools and created a foundation for learning for everyone.

What did de La Salle say Nyel's one mistake was? Bro. Leo Kirby, FSC, in the voice of de La Salle writes, that, "In his goodness of heart, he would open one school and then start another before the first school had taken root."

Why did Pope Pius XII name La Salle the patron of all teachers?

Bro. Leo Kirby Speaking as La Salle says, "That because the Brothers were intelligent, educated, compassionate, unselfish, and full of faith while teaching the poor and the rich is how La Salle received this honor (42)."

After six years of a "honeymoon period", why did things become difficult for La Salle?

According to Leo Kirby, FSC, how was De La Salle's legacy upheld? His legacy was upheld after his death and still is today. As Kirby writes as La Salle, "In a real sense though, i didn't die,"(40). when he says this, he is referring to the fact that De La Salle's legacy is upheld by all of the brothers and others who followed him, both in his taching and his values.

How many letters did one biographer say De La Salle wrote? What does this say about him as a person? La Salle wrote many letters in his life. As stated by brother Kirby while portraying him, "One biographer estimated that I might have written about 18,000 letters,"(34). This tells how expressive La Salle was and how he enjoys staying in contact with people.

After six years of a "honeymoon period" why did things become difficult for De La Salle? After the "honeymoon period" of his life, La Salle began running into many issues with church officials courts, groups of teachers who charged fees, the cousts, the loss of some of his teaches, and mainly his declining health throughout all of this.
